Israeli startup Modu unveiled recently an innovative mobile phone that can be “dressed” and connected to other compatible consumer electronics in order to enrich users’ experience. The Israeli company’s new cell phone’s goal is to revolutionize the mobile industry; the facts that Modu is the first cell phone that can be “dressed” in different “jackets” and that it can be connected to so-called “Modu mates” make the new gadget a really special gadget. But are these nice features enough to call Modu a revolutionary cell phone?
Still, the idea behind Modu is a good one; the Israeli startup wanted to give its device’s users the freedom to create a new phone as often as they want based on personal style and preferences. You don’t need to buy a new phone every three weeks or so, because you have Modu! You can choose from different Modu jackets, Modu enclosures and Modu mates for your phone and in just seconds you’ll feel like you have bought a new one. Modu mates are Modu-enabled consumer electronics including digital phone frames, media players, cameras, digitally enhanced cordless telephones and others, that make the brand new phone even more interesting and useful.
The Israeli startup made also public that it created a network of partners that would develop Modu mates; one of the partners is Blaupunkt, a car navigation and multimedia provider.
On the other hand, the jackets users can choose for their Modu mobile phone will be designed by lifestyle, fashion and entertainment companies, such as Universal Music Group, which has already announced that it decided to develop a range of Modu jackets featuring the label’s most popular artists.
“There are hundreds of handset models on the market; the trouble is that as a consumer you can only have one at a time and you’re usually tied to a long and expensive contract. Modu is challenging that with a solution that offers freedom, boundless possibilities, and the opportunity to change your phone without it costing a fortune,” said Dov Moran, Modu’s founder and CEO.
Among the large companies supporting Modu one could find SanDisk and Texas Instruments.
