In a bid to widen the reach of its location-based services, Nokia India today showcased its navigation devices portfolio, and announced future plans in this area.
The company currently has five devices with integrated GPS; the Nokia N95 and N95 8GB, Nokia N82, Nokia E90 Communicator, and Nokia 6110 Navigator. However, all Nokia S60 and many Series 40 devices support GPS via a Bluetooth wireless module.
The latest addition to Nokia’s devices with integrated GPS is the Nokia 6110 Navigator, which comes with fully integrated GPS navigation with a one-touch Navigator key. The handset has local maps of eight cities in India (Delhi and NCR, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad) pre-installed on the memory card for immediate navigation. Nokia claims that as of now, these maps have locations and details of 75,000+ km of roads, 10,000+ restaurants and hotels, and so on.
The 6110 Navigator features full turn-by-turn 3D navigation, and suggests the best route to follow to reach a location either by car or on foot. It offers clear instructions through voice guidance and turn arrows on a map. Nokia claims its Navigator is ideal for 3G multimedia and enabling of real-time video sharing and video calls.
Other features of the Navigator include: a 2 mega pixels camera with dedicated capture key, panorama mode, and integrated flash; 2.2-inches QVGA screen offering up to 16 million colors; and push email.
Meanwhile, the N95 and N95 8GB are also optimized for enjoying videos, playing games, and locating favorite destinations with A-GPS. With these devices, users can whiz to their ‘Nokia Maps’ locations faster, and access maps for over 50 countries.
The N82 is again a multimedia computer optimized for photography, navigation, and Internet connectivity. Featuring A-GPS, the phone enables users to explore their surroundings and find their way using navigation and routing, document their experiences with the phone’s high quality imaging, and instantly share their experiences with one click upload on the Web.
Other features of the N82 include: 5 mega pixels camera with powerful Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss optics, 2GB microSD card, new 3D multimedia menu, and support for the Ovi family of Nokia Internet services that include the Nokia Music Store, N-Gage games, and Nokia Maps.
Whereas, E90 is the first GPS-enabled device from the Nokia E Series portfolio, and offers onboard GPS along with high-speed connectivity to allow consumers search maps and navigate to desired locations. The E90 has a global positioning system (GPS) receiver, which uses satellites to determine a user’s location, speed, and direction.
Said Devinder Kishore, director (Marketing) of Nokia India, “With GPS and navigation services expanding rapidly into mobile communications devices, this industry is poised to grow. Maps and navigation will become a standard feature in a number of Nokia mobile devices.”
